Think of the Melbourne Fringe Festival , the all-inclusive annual festival of edgy, independent art, and you may not automatically think of involving your children. However, the lineup this year includes some rich and fun offerings for kids. I've scoured the 440 events on offer during the festival, which this year takes place between 14th September and 1st October, and come up with my list of the five top events for children.

1. The Dinosaur Time Machine

Take your child on a ride in a time machine and meet the dinosaurs. This show, which won the Best Children's Show (Adelaide Advertiser 2016) features scientific and fun dinosaur facts. Through the use of circus, puppetry and imaginative play, the show both educates and entertains. Plus your child can have a personal encounter with a life sized T-Rex.

The Dinosaur Time Machine is on each day at 1pm from 23rd September to 1st October at the Wonderland Spiegeltent at Docklands. Tickets are $24 each. Suitable for kids aged 3-9 years. Click here for more information.

2. I Hate Children, Children's show

Award winning magician Paul Dabek must have missed W.C. Fields' saying about 'never working with children or animals', because in this show, your children are the STARS of the show, and every child is invited on stage to help Paul perform his magic.

Top rated at Edinburgh Fringe, and the number one children's show at Adelaide Fringe, this is a show that will entertain children AND parents. Recommended for children aged 6 plus.

Catch I Hate Children at the Melba Spiegeltent in Collingwood. It plays at 3.00pm on Saturday 16th, 23rd and 30th September. Tickets are $20. Click here for more information.

3. Trash Test Dummies

You'll never look at a wheelie bin the same way again after seeing this fun show that's suitable for the whole family. Winners of the best children's presentation at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2016 and 2015, the Trash Test Dummies will entertain everyone with their slapstick comedy and circus routines.

Trash Test Dummies plays at Emerald City, The Gingerbread House, Meat Market, 3 Blackwood Street, North Melbourne, each day from 23rd to 30th September (check the website for session times). Tickets are $25. Click here for more information.

4. The Kabooms are Ridonkulous!

Brothers Angus and Liam are reading their favourite book, but suddenly it explodes! Disaster! How will they know how the story ends? Well that's where the audience comes in. They will help to figure out what page comes next, what characters may appear and how the story finishes. This is an improv style show that will encourage creativity and imagination.

The Kabooms are Ridonkulous! plays at Bluestone Church Arts Space, 8A Hyde St, Footscray, at 11am each day from 23rd September to 1st October. Tickets are $14.50. You'll find more details here .

5. Kooky Spooks

Introduce your child to the surprising world of Japanese Butoh theatre. Transform, shapeshift and discover your inner animal in this afternoon of kooky dance.

This FREE event takes place at ArtPlay, Birrarung Marr, (behind Fed Square), Melbourne. There is one show only, taking place at 2pm on Wednesday 27th September. The show runs for 90 minutes and you are welcome to stay for the full show or come and go as you please. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Details here .
