8 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival Event Highlights

The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival will be held from March 2nd to 21st, 2012, and while that is a while away, many of the ticketed events are now sold out. So we thought we would select 8 event highlights which are either free or still have tickets available, so you wont miss out on this great annual event. Some of these events will be held in Melbourne, while others will be located around Victoria.

Foodie Films @ Federation Square

Food and cinema share a special relationship and at this event you are invited to view some classic foodie films on the Federation Square 'Big Screen' for free. The deckchairs will be set up for you and your friends and family to view a range of titles, running from Friday the 2nd to Friday the 9th of March 2012.

Program highlights include the fascinating documentary Kings of Pastry, the cult favourite Bottle Shock, the acclaimed British television film Toast and the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi. There are also some kid friendly titles; Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Ratatouille are also screening.

Cellar Door & Farm Gate @ South Wharf Promenade

On Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 4th of March, 2012 from 12:00pm to 5:00pm daily, you are invited to explore Cellar Door & Farm Gate, a riverside boutique wine, beer, cider and artisan produce market. This is a great way to stock up on all your gourmet favourites.

This is a ticketed event; general admission tickets are priced at $35. This entitles the ticket holder entry to the event, a tasting glass and food sampling.

Swan Hill Food & Wine Festival

Running from the Friday the 2nd of March to Sunday the 4th of March, the Swan Hill Food & Wine Festival is a great way to explore the Swan Hill region and the local food and wine scene.

The 2012 program includes 'The World's Longest Lunch' and a Farmer's Market.

There are various ticketing options starting from $10.

Footscray Rickshaw Run

This is popular festival activity; guests will be guided around Footscray foodie hotspots on a rickshaw. You will indulge in a five course meal, which will include freshly shucked oysters.

Bookings are required for this activity, which is priced at $75. It will run on selected days between Friday the 2nd and Sunday the 18th of March, 2012.

Sweets Exhibition @ Immigration Museum

Running from Thursday the 15th to Wednesday the 21st of March, 2012, Sweets: Tastes and Traditions from Many Cultures is an exhibition which will highlight sweets from all around the world. Sweets are often served during holidays, festivals and other celebratory events, so this is a fascinating way to explore the connection between culture and cuisine. Various cultural communities have contributed to this exhibition.

Entry to this exhibition is free with museum entry ($10).

Thai Culture & Food Festival @ Federation Square

Cultural festivals are now a regular feature at Federation Square, but this particular cultural festival event is being held as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. This is a popular annual event and entry is free.

It will be held on Sunday the 18th of March from 10am to 9pm at Federation Square.

The highlight here is that amongst the cultural festivities, there will be several celebrated Thai cuisine restaurants serving a range of authentic Thai delights priced at only $8 per dish. There will also be live entertainment over at the Singa Beer Garden.

World Street Food Festival @ Queen Victoria Market

Also on Sunday the 18th of March is the World Street Food Festival. Held at the Queen Victoria Market from 10am, this anticipated event will allow foodies to explore European, South American, African, Asian and Australian cuisine in one venue. This event is an incredibly popular event and will also feature live entertainment.

Tasting plates are priced at $10.

The Dumpling Crawl @ Yum Cha Cafe

This is our final selection and it is a celebration of dumplings and more dumplings. Hosted by the Yum Cha Cafe, this event is priced at $55 per person. During this event, you can indulge on Cantonese dim sum, courtesy of Yum Cha Cafe, Shanghainese dim sum, courtesy of Hutong Dumpling Bar and Chiu Chow Dumplings, courtesy of Mask of China.
