Melbourne, you're into your second month of Spring for 2012. Some great events for adults and kids alike that are less well known and otherwise unique are on for show in the city of culture. Following on from the top things to do in September, now some of Melbourne's unique events come out of hiding. The exhibitions are not included as they're covered in another article.
These events are presented in date order, and not necessarily in order of preference.
1. Melbourne Leisurefest
The 5th annual Melbourne leisurefest will be on at the Sandown Racecourse yet again. A diverse range of boats, RV's, camping, fishing, 4x4 and accessories from all leading leisure brands will be available for sale and to test drive. The event organisers are also putting on free entertainment for the kids. There is plenty of free on site parking, and Sandown Park train station is right nearby. On from the 4th to the 7th of October. Further information on this event can be found by clicking here.
This event is more popular and well known. The fringe festival has now left Melbourne, and now the real thing comes alive. Melbourne Festival is definitely dubbed as one of Australia's flagship international festivals. Over a two week period, an abundance of dance, theatre, visual arts, music and other outdoor events will be featured. Think Federation Square, home to free entertainment at the main stage. Various shows will be on at various venues throughout Melbourne and the city's art precinct. Further information on this event can be found by clicking here.
3. Melbourne Marathon
On again, and this annual running event has been around since 1978. The race will start at the MCG this time round. Events include the full marathon, half marathon, a 10km run as well as a 5.7km run with a 4km walk. Further information on this annual event can be found by clicking here.
4. Children's Week
More of a humanitarian focus being alive and well here, Children's week is an annual event that highlights the needs and achievements of children. This event coincides with Universal Children's Day on the 24th of October. Children's Week is on in Melbourne from the 20th to the 28th of October. Further information on this event can be found by clicking here.
5. Around the Bay in a Day
It makes sense for Melbourne to host an annual event such as this one, especially with Spring and that the city of culture is also a bike loving city. This event is dubbed as one of Australia's biggest mass bicycle rides. A variety of routes from 100, 135, 210 and 250km bike ride options beginning from Melbourne, Sorrento or Geelong. An event for charity held on the 21st of October 2012. Further information on this event can be found by clicking here.
An interesting and amazing month awaits you Melbourne. Watch this space for November, and enjoy the second month of Spring.
Also if you're wondering what the relevance of this article's image is all about, it was about catching Elmo roaming Spencer Street, right near the airport bus exit at Southern Cross Station on a recent Friday night. That provided a few minutes of cultural entertainment until Elmo got taken away by the cops a few minutes afterwards.
