Dodgeball in action

Ever enviously watched "DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story" and wished you could get in on the action? Well now's your chance with Melbourne Dodgeball.

Located at the Bulleen Templestowe Leisure Centre, Melbourne Dodgeball has proved so popular a new competition is soon to be opened at Hawthorn Secondary College in July. Mixed team games are currently played Sunday nights from 5:45-9:30 and Tuesdays from 7:15-10:15pm at Bulleen. The Hawthorn league will offer mixed and men's matches Thursday nights from 8:00-10:15pm. Competitors must be over the age of 18 and match fees are $60.

The Rules: The game follows easy to understand official Dodgeball rules accurately outlined in the cult movie. Two teams of six face off on a divided court. Basically, opposing players must hit or catch each other out with live balls. A successfully caught ball will also result in an outed member of the same team being able to re-enter the competition. The last team standing or alternatively, with the most remaining players at the end of the 5 minute time limit win the game. Whichever team achieves the most games in the 40 minute session win the overall match. A more comprehensive explanation of the rules including code of conduct is outlined on the Melbourne Dodgeball website-

Dodgeball is well refereed but relies heavily on the honour system. Matches can sometimes be very competitive but any inappropriate comments or behaviour will result in expulsion. Overall Dodgeball is very fun and sportsmanlike game. Aspiring players should be aware that although the regulation balls used are soft, impact is often hard and can hurt. Although anyone willing to play a sport where balls are purposely hurled at them would expect this. As a result players must sign a waiver before the start of each season.

To register a new Dodgeball team simply fill out the online form, games are played by teams of 6 but definitely include subs. A maximum of four males can be on the court in the mixed competition. If you do not have enough players or are a individual seeking a team, Melbourne Dodgeball recommends posting your details on their message board.
