Melbourne has a thriving
events scene. Every year, hundreds of thousands of locals and visitors gather for design, craft, art, photography, food, hobby, adventure, travel, wellness,
ethnic, cultural and home improvement fairs. While there are many popular and specialty venues around Melbourne including the
Royal Exhibition Building, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Cricket Grounds,
Australian Centre for the Moving Image and the cultural precinct of
Federation Square, nothing comes close in terms of size and capacity to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Design
The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre was developed and constructed by international builder Multiplex as the most versatile convention and exhibition facility in Australia. It was the first convention centre in the world to received a 6 Star Green Star environmental rating.
The building actually consists of two sections, the Melbourne Convention Centre and Melbourne Exhibition Centre. The convention section boasts a long entry foyer, a grand banquet room and 52 meeting rooms spread over 70,000 square metres. There is also a 5,550 seat state-of-the-art plenary area that can be divided into three self-contained, acoustically separate theatres.
An internal link provides access to the exhibition section featuring meeting rooms, a 466-seat auditorium and 30,000 square metres of purpose-built and pillarless exhibition space. Also known as "Jeff's Shed" after a former premier of Victoria, it is the largest pillarless floor space in the southern hemisphere. Cafes with seating are located within both sections for easy grab and go meals and coffee.
This award-winning project was also designed as a centrepiece of Melbourne's South Wharf. It serves as a lifestyle hub on the banks of Yarra River with accommodations, art, entertainment, culture, food and wine. A 15-level tower houses the 5-star Hilton Hotel which offers 396 rooms, suites and apartments as well as amenities like an executive lounge, bar and restaurant.
Location
Located on the banks of the Yarra River, the building enjoys a picturesque promenade, lawns and river views while being in close proximity to the Melbourne CBD. The venue is serviced by all forms of pubic transport including trams, buses and taxis making it easily accessible at all hours of the day.
Being part of South Wharf offers direct access to wide range of ethnic, casual and fine dining options and outlet shopping.
A short stroll from the South Wharf promenade places visitors in Southbank with the Crown Entertainment Complex, retail shops, cinema, accommodations, bars, cafes and award-winning restaurants.
