Are you sick of your wardrobe but feeling cash strapped, time poor and/or concerned about the environment? Never fear The Clothing Exchange is here. Operating in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra, The Clothing Exchange run events where you can swap your quality garments for others. To attend a Clothing Exchange Event and swap your clothes you can purchase a ticket online. The price of tickets vary from $15 to $25 depending on the size of the event and the venue.
How does it work exactly? I hear you ask. Each Clothing Exchange Event is well organised and managed. Everyone who has purchased a ticket brings along up to 6 garments or accessories. Each piece is checked at the door to make sure it is up to swapping standard. Once items are given the O.K, swappers are given a button for each piece they have brought along as 'currency'. Clothing is hung on racks around the space ready for swapping to begin. Each event has a specific starting time, ensuring the swap is fair and runs smoothly. Once the starting bell chimes swappers wander around looking for items that take their fancy. Punters can take up to 3 items into the dressing room at a time. Once an item has been found for each button, they wander over where volunteers make the swap 'official', taking buttons and handing over items.
On the day I attended a swap in Rose Street, Melbourne I was a little worried I wouldn't find any items in my size. Volunteers and other swappers were very helpful, suggesting clothing combinations or accessories which might suit. I ended up taking home garments I would never have thought about purchasing usually and have worn them numerous times since. A great result.
So what do you need to know before selecting your clothes to swap? The guidelines given for garments include:
- All clothing needs to be clean and folded or pressed.
[I]- Choose garments which are likely to be valued by others e.g not the baggy tracksuit pants you've had for 5 years.
- Garments must be free of faults or have faults which are easy to repair such as a button missing.
- Nothing stinky, piled or straying too far from perfect.
- No undergarments, swimwear, tracksuits or polarfleece.
Follow the guidelines for choosing clothes to swap and you can't go wrong.
