While the 2011 Projections Program is part of the New Year's Eve Gold Melbourne festivities; the special annual event will actually kick off on Friday 2nd of December with a unique Christmas event; an animated retelling of The Nutcracker. This free family friendly event will occur outside the State Library of Victoria, from approximately 9pm.
Animated images of all the classic characters from the ballet, including the Snow Queen, Sugar Plum Fairy, Mother Ginger and Mouse King, will be projected onto the iconic walls of the State Library of Victoria; it will be a spectacular display of colour. The Nutcracker projection display will run until Christmas Day. This is a great CBD Christmas attraction to accompany the free Spirit of the Square program at Federation Square, which will run from Thursday 1st of December.
From Boxing Day to New Year's Eve, another display will appear on the walls of the State Library of Victoria - 'Hopes for the Future.' This program features unique quotes about life in Melbourne, from the Gold Rush era to today, projected onto the walls of the State Library of Victoria. This event will also begin at approximately at 9pm.
And finally on New Year's Eve, from 9pm, the State Library of Victoria, along with the National Gallery of Victoria, will feature the The Colours of Melbourne program - another set of projections, this time with a focus on the four seasons; Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring.
The Melbourne City Projections Display will then come to a stunning close as the countdown to 2012 begins at 11:50pm - and as we welcome 2012 - watch as Melbourne becomes a 'city of gold'.
