Cider took a while to take off in Australia, but now that it has- it's here to stay. Becoming the perfect summer drink, light and refreshing, Melbournians have completely embraced the sweet brew and now I am here to give you the low-down on what is about and worth a try.

Monteith's Crushed Apple Cider
Coming out of New Zealand, this cider is not as sweet as you would expect of an apple based drink. Light in colour and light in taste, it is one of the more popular new choices around. Many city pubs sell Monteith's on tap, so have a look around cause it is 100% better than out of a bottle. My personal favourite.

5 Seeds
Another option, more commonly found in a bottle although on tap in some places, 5 Seeds is made by Tooheys Extra Dry. It has a clean, crisp taste which has really helped to boost the popularity of cider in Australia.

Gypsy Pear Cider
Bridging the gap between pear and apple ciders, Gypsy has grown significantly in popularity in recent months. Its crisp taste makes it easy to confuse with apple ciders, but the faint pear after taste proves the difference. Better on tap, but not bad out of a bottle either. A more common find than other new cider options. Made by Melbourne's 2 Brothers Beer Brewery.

Coldstream Cider
A rare, but exciting find on tap, this is a local Yarra Valley option. Medium dry to taste, one of the better options using Australian apples.

Napoleone & Co Apple or Pear Cider
Another dryer option for cider drinkers. Made by the Yarra Valley's Punt Road Winery, their cider is one of the newer options that many cider drinkers haven't heard of. Growing in popularity, it is becoming more available on tap. Worth the search.

Kopparberg Pear Cider
A sweeter Swedish cider, not available on tap at all and only newly available in Australia. Only the pear flavour can be found so far, best served on ice.

Rekorderlig Cider
Another sweeter Swedish cider, there are four flavours available for purchase in Australia. A variance on the standard apple or pear options, Rekorderlig offer a strawberry and lime as well as a wild berries cider. Both are super sweet and must be served over ice. A good option for the sweeter drink lovers, I couldn't have more than one in a session.

Due to the growing popularity of cider in Australia, it is much more common to find cider on tap in most pubs and bars. Thankfully there is more variety than Strongbow and Bulmers to keep cider lovers interested. This list doesn't cover all the options, just a few of the more common ones now about in Melbourne.

Cider has grown in popularity so much, iconic Melbourne pub Young and Jacksons now has a rooftop bar almost completely devoted to the popular summer drink.
