There's an enthralling feeling when you enter the large tournament room of the Melbourne Chess Club. A huge crowd is lined up along tables. Black and white pieces are placed between them and they're staring intently at the 8x8 board in front of them. Their minds are ticking over; all of the concentration they possess is focused on that board. The only noise you hear is the chess clock players hit after they make a move. You'll feel like you're caught in a spell.
If you're looking for an inexpensive hobby then the Melbourne Chess Club in Fitzroy will suit you. Situated between Brunswick and Nicholson Street, this club has events occurring every day. All skill levels are welcome and the people running the chess club are accommodating and approachable.
If you're looking to get started with chess then novice night on Wednesday is free for your first visit and $5 after that. You'll listen to a talk by an advanced chess player and then go on to practice what you've learnt. If you're more serious about chess then Tuesdays and Thursdays have endgame and opening nights where they're dedicated solely to that aspect of chess. Saturdays have junior chess coaching and a tournament for advanced players. Sunday holds a tournament for novices.
There are some strong players at the Melbourne Chess Club who, despite giving you a walloping across the board, will give you great advice. If you're really keen about getting better at chess then there's private coaching which will fast track your improvement.
The atmosphere is a great one and you'll feel welcome at the Melbourne Chess Club. As well as having a brilliant time and picking up a hobby you can play all through your life.
