Melbourne's iconic Shot Tower (the 'Coop's Shot Tower' ), which is an intrinsic part of the Melbourne Central shopping complex structure, is celebrating its 125th birthday! Yes, it's 125 years since the Shot Tower was completed, and Melbourne Central is marking the occasion with a full week of celebratory events.



The program includes a series of free tours, exhibitions and installations during Thursday 22nd to Saturday 31st May 2014. Here's some of what you can expect during this time:

Melbourne Precincts' author Dale Campisi will guide you around Melbourne Central and into its past, revealing the story of the Coop family's iconic Shot Tower. Bookings released soon.

Shot Tower Insta-bition
How many times a day do you think Melbourne Central's Shot Tower is photographed? See the best Instagram shots, as captured by visitors to the centre, in the pop-up exhibition.



Shot Tower Museum
Discover the rich past of the heritage-listed Coop's Shot Tower. You'll learn about the building's fascinating history, from its early 19th Century beginnings to its current iteration. Enter through R.M Williams on level 2.

Interactive light and sound show
Kollide 'brings the Shot Tower back to life' with its light and sound show. This show is playing after dark each night between 6.00pm and 1.00am in the Shot Tower Square.



Lost Melbourne Photographic Exhibition
Every Melbournian is full of stories about their experiences here, so to celebrate the history of the city, Melbourne Central has invited a group of locals to share their view of the past. The people behind the popular Facebook group Lost Melbourne have looked long and hard to uncover some incredible archival images, which will be displayed as a visual installation in Shot Tower Square.

There is also a one day shopping festival at Melbourne Central on Thursday 22nd May, from 10.00am to 10.00pm. You'll enjoy more than 200 special offers, discounts and exclusive events.
Answer:

The Shot Tower was originally used to produce lead shot for firearms. Lead was heated until molten, then dropped through a copper sieve high in the tower. The liquid lead forms tiny spherical balls by surface tension, then solidifies as it falls. The partially cooled balls are caught at the floor of the tower in a water-filled basin.
