Weddings, parties, everything
Hosting a function soon? Melbourne boasts plenty of function venues for the next engagement party or 50th birthday you have to organise so chances are you'll never run out of great options. Occasionally though, the food served at some function venues can be a bit dull or limited which makes hosting your next function at a fully licensed restaurant all the more enticing. Restaurants that offer functions packages have a team of qualified functions staff that can help you organise your next event so you'll definitely be in good hands – oh, and did I mention that the food is bound to be amazing? Here are five of my favourite city restaurants for functions:

1. Secret Kitchen: If you want to give your guests the ultimate Asian fine dining experience minus the pretentiousness, this Chinatown restaurant is for you. Led by a team of friendly professionals, Secret Kitchen caters for wedding receptions, birthday parties, product launches and seminars. Several function spaces can be found upstairs with the option to remove dividers to make one big room if you have an extremely large party. Secret Kitchen offers Cantonese classics as well as some hard-to-find dishes in Melbourne such as the seasonal roast goose and truffle siu mai. Pair your banquet with something from the premium wine cellar featuring hundreds of labels, some of which are exclusive to Secret Kitchen.

2. Uncle Collins Street: Just like your favourite Vietnamese uncle, this new addition to the Paris end of Collins Street embodies light-hearted fun and laughter. Although there is no dedicated functions space per se, Uncle openly welcomes groups of all sizes with open arms making this upstairs space perfect for business lunches and work (or non-work) related drinks. Its 'Uncle Knows Best' banquet menu ($59 per person) the ideal way to sample your way through some contemporary Vietnamese offerings which may include Uncle's signature crispy pigs ear banh mi or pan seared barramundi with glass noodles and grilled pineapple salad.

3. Mr Mason: If the west end of Collins Street is more your thing, look to Mr Mason and its cosy, rustic setting for inspiration. Mr Mason's menu stems from classic French bistro cuisine intertwined with local ingredients, whether you opt for a canapés package or a three course sit-down options featuring coq au vin or grass fed sirloin steaks with béarnaise and watercress salad. Spread across three functions spaces (lounge, restaurant or alfresco terrace), Mr Mason can accommodate intimate get togethers of ten or larger shindigs featuring 200 of your closest friends.

4. Sezar: Armenian flavours combine with an intimately cosy space and a gentle touch of elegance in this two-storey laneway restaurant. The upstairs area featuring its own bar can be reserved for your function, seating guest lists of up to 40 people; those with bigger groups (of up to 150) can ask to book the entire restaurant, opening both storeys for a big cocktail do. Choose between a canapés menu featuring Sezar classics such as the spinach and feta boreg (the ultimate finger food!) or opt for the sit-down banquet option featuring the likes of lamb shish kebabs and other meaty mains, all designed to share.

5. Trunk: With a space covering the main restaurant and bar with its more casual American-style diner sliding neatly alongside it (and one of the city's largest beer garden in between), Trunk offers a versatile gathering space for all occasions. Function menu options are distinctively modern European and include mouth-watering canapés and grazing plates or set course menus. If you choose the latter, you and your guests can sit down to Trunk's signature 12-hour roasted lamb with yoghurt, freekah and pomegranates or go more casual with their pizza packages. Trunk also offers additional services such as event styling and flowers – and even conference stationery design.
