Years BC (Before Child!) my husband and I had quite the social life! We'd frequent hip and happening bars all over town, and were familiar with most of the cool night spots in Melbourne and London.
In recent years, after many night awakenings with the little one, our previous escapades of late night partying at popular night spots, were replaced with early nights with a cup of warm Milo and a movie.
We fell off Melbourne's coolest nightspot radar, and wouldn't know where to go for a good night out if someone asked.
Thinking it would be about time to check out Melbourne's cool bar scene once more, as a birthday treat, I booked my husband and I onto MELTours City Bar Tour on a Friday night.
As explained on MELTours website when I booked the tour: Many of the best bars in the city of Melbourne are easily overlooked if you don't already know where they are! A plain doorway could lead to a venue with a great vibe and wonderful drinks. Let MELTours show you what many people often walk past."
We met Jerome, our Tour Guide for the evening, and were accompanied by a group of 5 lovely ladies, whose daughters had treated them to a night out. Jerome explained to us that we'd visit approximately 10 -15 bars, depending on how we were going after the first handful.
We received two complimentary cocktails and nibbles included with the price of the tour. At some of the bars we visited we could choose to sit down for a quick drink, and at others we just poked our head in, and Jerome gives us the low down. On our final bar visit, Jerome left us to our own devices, where we could choose to continue our night out, or make it in time to catch the last train home.
As the bar tour is done on foot, as it should rightly be, we became familiar with Melbourne's hidden laneways, and beautiful architecture, as we meandered through the CBD in search of hidden nightspots.
Some of our personal favourites that we'll definitely be heading back to; Melbourne's smallest bar, Bar Americano, and The Berlin Bar in Corrs Lane, divided in to two bars: West Berlin and East Berlin.
Bar tours are run on Friday or Saturday nights, with a shortened version on Thursday night for those with a tighter budget, and when venues are quieter.
To emphasise, attending a MELTours Bar Tour is NOT a drinking tour, but instead, a sophisticated evening walking tour, which touches on some of the unique and coolest nightspots all over town, that you can familiarise yourself with, and return another time for a great night out with your friends. Highly recommended.
