Speed dating brings to mind frightening scenes of awkward conversation and general mishap as you may have seen on films and television shows. The show is probably a comedy and you can't help but think isn't it lucky you're not in their shoes; those poor single people, putting their hearts and dignity on the line for a shot at love. What about the latest online dating craze? Whilst some people have found true love on the internet you may be a bit frightened of the whole idea, along with the other 90% of single people.

How does one meet other singles in a relaxed environment? Maybe the guy slurring over a beer at your local pub isn't your next boyfriend and perhaps it isn't appropriate for your mother to meet the young lady grinding on other men at the club you went to last Saturday night. The world of dating can be a bit complicated and uneasy for some.

Well forget what you think you know about speed dating and grab some mates and take the adventure on a Melbourne Bar Safari night. The idea behind the night out is an original one and a fun one at that.

Guys: Are you ready for the expedition? You and two mates explore the three nominated bars for the night and meet at each destination three lovely ladies. Relax into the Friday night vibe and enjoy some drinks with your mates.

Ladies: You and two friends can get cosy in a funky bar, order some cocktails and await the guys to come and visit you. You will meet a total of nine explorers during the night.

With a group of friends it takes the edge of one-on-one awkward moments and becomes a fun, social night out of meeting new people. The ladies are situated in three different bars across Fitzroy. My girlfriends and I were in the funky, American style bar called the 'Kodiak Club'. We settled into our booth, ordered a few cocktails and waited anxiously for the first group to arrive. The night ran surprisingly seamlessly and was well planned and organised.

Enjoying the night!

The first group arrives with some nerves also, but before too long there's laughter and everyone relaxes into the flow of the night. There is no pressure, everyone chats and jokes. You get to know people individually before reluctantly you realise time is up! And the next group of guys makes their way to your bar. Don't worry if you couldn't finish your conversation because everyone meets up at the end.

The guys enjoyed a bit of orienteering, following their itinerary from bar to bar in a street buzzing with Friday night anticipation. They meet a different group of lovely lasses and await the big group meet up at the close of the evening.

On our particular Bar Safari night, we all headed to the Provincial Hotel in Fitzroy. Everyone is reunited and conversation picks up where it left off. Some more drinks are shared, between friends this time not strangers. The footy is on T.V. and suddenly there are some rivals amongst our new acquaintances.

On reflection of the night I ask my close friend what she thought, "It was a new take on meeting people in a more comfortable environment. It was nice to have a conversation with someone you don't know over a few drinks and amongst friends too"

If you are in search of a new adventure grab some mates and get yourself onto the itinerary of the next Bar Safari speed dating night. Jump on their website for more information.

Enjoy the atmosphere and who knows where the night will lead?
