Award-winning queer musical sketch comedy duo Mel O'Brien and Samantha Andrew - better known as Mel and Sam - are back, bringing their show High Pony to MICF 2023. The show builds on the success of the popular Shit-Wrecked! and No Hat No Play! The Cabaret .

The duo won 'Best Cabaret Weekly Award 2022 Adelaide Fringe', and it's easy to see why. They have a distinctive, slightly manic approach to performance that leaves me wondering how on earth they can maintain that momentum for a full 60 minutes. But somehow they do.

If there's a line to be crossed, they're not afraid to crash right over it.

Whereas their two earlier shows had a loose theme, Sam admits at the start that High Pony doesn't. Which gives the duo the freedom to skirt across myriad diverse topics. For example, they do a sketch about a local netball competition, an impression of people who supervise water slides at fun parks; there's even an appearance by 'little Orphan Annie' and 'Daddy Warbucks'.

There is a 'where's Wally' scene, which morphs into a metaphor about the 'invisible' people in society, and how hard it is to find other similar 'invisible' people because they're, well, invisible.

But it's not just the comedy. Mel and Sam's original songs are gold, their harmonies delightful, sometimes belying the provocative and outrageous content. Last night's gems included Babies Are Cancelled, and Lesbians Don't Get The Ick, And That's Science!.

This is comedy as social and observational commentary, which is funny, biting and sharp as a tack. The scripting and delivery are tight, suggesting many hours of rehearsing and perfecting.

As my partner put it, you get a lot of comedy 'bang for your buck' with High Pony .

If you haven't already joined the Mel and Sam fan club, it's time! Don't miss this fabulous show.

High Pony plays at The Toff in Town, Level 2, Curtin House, 252 Swanston Street, Melbourne until Sunday 9 April.
