There's no reason to complain that you have no-where to go or no-one to go with anymore. Join a Meetup group for your interest of choice - from clubbing to cooking, first time mums, yoga, movie addicts, and single men picking up women (seriously) - there's a group to suit everyone, in cities all around the world. You can even start your own!

Meetup with new friends and discover your city

Similar to other social media sites, one is required to create a basic Meetup profile and joins their interest groups with a brief introduction. Often as easy as writing "Hi, wanting to meet new friends", however, some interest groups require a little more detail such as age, interests, and experience to ensure you fit the eligibility criteria.

Once you have joined the group, you are notified about events for the particular group via email, and may RSVP to the invitation. As a member of the group, you may check out who is going to the event; important if your main purpose is to be on the prowl ;-)

Events are at your own expense (dinner, drinks, entrance fees), while some incur a nominal fee ($2; walking, discussion groups) to allow the hosts to continue the group and cover administration costs.

Age and background varies according to the Meetup, but all organized events will have you meeting new friends and having a great time.

If you live in Melbourne and enjoy going to bars and clubs, I highly recommend you join The Melbourne Happy Hour Commandos and Night Life Enthusiasts, both organized and run by friendly and welcoming hosts who venture out to trendy city bars for after work drinks every Friday from 6pm til late. Not only will you discover many Melbourne bars, but you will usually get over 50 instant friends to talk, drink and dance with!

So stop staring at the TV, switch off your social media sites, get off the couch, and go out and learn, discover, share, and have fun with new people.
