The increasing popular biennial Leafy Sea Dragon Festival in Yankalilla is offering three exciting literary events at Hooked on Books and Gifts at Main Road, Normanville. These Meet the Author events will be conducted by three SA writers, who have special connections with this part of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Where: To be held in the historical courtyard at Hooked on Books. If weather is unpleasant a marquee will be provided.

Cost of each workshop: $2.00

Paul Rutter, ( Surfer, illustrator, commercial artist, animator, children's writer, has worked on book & film production), is the author and illustrator of Surfer Rider Joe , a environmental book designed for kids aged 5 - 9 years. The book was inspired by the SA coastlines, Yorke Peninsula and a little of Kangaroo Island.

About 12 years ago, Paul found himself on the beach, when there were no waves, sketching pictures and creating characters. That was the beginning of his book Surfer Rider Joe.

At this festival, Paul will conduct a workshop for kids where they can get involved and draw sharks, octopuses, turtles, sea dragons or anything to do with the ocean. Children are invited to bring their own colour pencils and paper so they can learn how to draw ocean characters. Paul will provide feedback on the children's work.

Paul will also read from Surfer Rider Joe, and talk to the kids about sustainability and how it can begin in your own backyard, like making compost, catching water and having solar panels on your roof; so this fun family book launch is a little education session as well.

Children to bring pencils & paper, if they wish to join in drawing workshop.

Date: 17 April. 12.00 - 2.00 pm.

Kate Willson (Author of children's books and short stories, Adult short stories) is the author of Race for Home in 2007 and Have a Go, Henry! in 2012. Kate loves the Fleurieu Peninsula, and until recently owned a home at Normanville. She has friends who enjoy scuba diving and underwater photography, and she has several framed photos, her favourite being a Leafy Sea Dragon.

Kate will combine reading from her book Have a Go, Henry! with some storytelling and fun activities, which she tailors to the children's age range. Her workshop will include activities, which will give the kids an opportunity to 'have a go' at things they may not have tried before, like 'quoits' and 'one bounce bucket.'

Other activities:
Pre-school/junior primary children can have a go at colouring Henry in.
Mid-primary aged children can join in a discussion around books and writing, and may have a go in writing the end to a story.

Date: 18 April. 12.00 - 2.00 pm.

Robert Bean (Southern Fleurieu author, musician, poet, songwriter, public speaker, management consultant & trainer) offers a book launch with a difference with original music and readings.

Robert's Match Puzzle was described by an experienced Melbourne bookseller as "an extremely unmarketable book."
This comment delighted Robert, who admits his collection of 70 odd short pieces and drawings is very hard to categorise.

He says," People are quite confused about what it is or isn't - but as they say, they can't stop turning the pages to see what's next, so I really don't mind."

During his book launch Robert will perform three of his original songs, linking them to three readings from his book, followed by a book signing. Prepare yourself for a diverse and diverting experience.

Date: 19 April. 12.00 - 2.00 pm.
