Authentic, sweet, fun Asian desserts
"You have to try Taro Ball Mania!"

Sounded like another one of his crazy ass extreme contact sports which I had no interest whatsoever in being part of.

But no, actually it's an Asian dessert made from, well, Taro Balls...and lots of them!

Now that I'm interested in!

I'm a latecomer to the Asian dessert thing, but I'm loving them! Sweet and delicious with crazy Asian names, they have their own style. While I think of Italian desserts as sophisticated and American desserts as comforting, Asian desserts are just fun and cute.

Meet Fresh

Taro Ball Mania is at Meet Fresh, an authentic Taiwanese dessert shop in the heart of Sunnybank, amongst all the other authentic Asian cafes and restaurants in the suburbs' "other Chinatown". Touted as fresh with desserts made the traditional way, the little cafe is bright and fun with happy staff and a buzzy atmosphere, even for a Wednesday night.

Taro Ball Mania

The Taro Ball Mania dish is the weirdest, most surprising combination of flavours and textures. Handmade taro balls of luscious chewiness with grass jelly and delicious sugary syrup was an explosion of sweetness.

The servings sizes are decent and cheap. The Taro Ball Mania is just $6 and filling enough that you really have to make several trips to try everything on the menu. A menu filled with authentic and traditional Asian dessert ingredients like lotus seeds, grass jelly, tofu, pearls, barley, red bean paste and sweet potato. (Yeah, I didn't think sweet potato was that Asian either).

Lotus Seed Tofu Pudding

On our second trip I had the Lotus Seed Tofu Pudding. Silky tofu swims in a sugary syrup topped with sweet, chalky lotus seeds. While it didn't look familiar at first, one mouthful and I remembered eating this as a child at my Grandmothers. So I'll be the first to vouch for its authenticity.

Meet Fresh is just fun all round. Fun food, fun staff, fun atmosphere, heck even the branding is fun! Try it for its authenticity and all round yumminess. really must try the Taro Ball Mania!
