There are very few people in the world who have gotten close enough to pat a big cat and then lived to tell the tale, but in Canberra there is a very special opportunity to do exactly that at the National Zoo and Aquarium .

The Zookeepers brimmed with love and care for their charges, and it was clear the cheetahs love the attention - even from people they'd never seen before. I was thrilled and honoured when one of the cheetahs licked my hand and then gently and playfully took my hand in its mouth.

I still feel incredibly privileged to have met two beautiful big cats, and heard them purr as I patted them. The zookeepers took plenty of great photos and videos for me, and I could not have asked for a better or more personal experience.

You'll notice she isn't de-clawed!

At this time children are not allowed within sight of the enclosure, as the cheetahs see smaller people as a likely meal and their behaviour becomes dangerous.
The price includes zoo entry, so it's a great idea to spend a whole day marvelling at a range of wonderful animals. You can also see tigers, lions, snow leopards, and cougars.
