I love to explore & share my experiences and photographs with others on the off-chance that they too get a buzz out of simple things at their own back door.

Please note Meesh's restaurant closed in July 2012.

Recently, I decided to surprise my big sister and gatecrash her Birthday Lunch. She lives on the Gold Coast and I live in Sydney, so secrecy and allies were involved.

I phoned early to wish her 'Happy Birthday' and a great day. I said I wanted to catch her before my morning walk as I surreptitiously dashed to the airport.

We chose the recently revamped Meesh's restaurant right on the beach at Burleigh Heads. Formerly known as Mermaids, and part of the Burleigh Beach House complex, it has forever been one of my favourite stop-off spots between Coolangatta and Surfers Paradise.

Once a very casual, yet gorgeous place to eat, it has now moved upscale with padded semi-circular raised booths hugging the periphery whilst regular candle-lit tables service the rest of the restaurant. All have white tablecloths and a distinctly Martha Stewart meets Hamptons Beach House feel. You may choose to enjoy the special tapas area with stunning lit tables or the fully enclosed air conditioned cocktail bar.

In the distance you can see the shimmering silver towers of Surfers Paradise.
A perfect venue to celebrate or just relax, the food and service were as pleasant as the surroundings with prices for wine, champagnes and food all being well within most people's budgets. To give you some idea, the bill for our group of seven was about $324.00. We had seven meals, two of which were entree-sized, one beer, one bottle of Domaine Chandon, one Pinot Griggio, teas and coffees for 5, and a birthday dessert for one. We averaged out at $46 per person.

The menu is Modern Australian; clean, fresh and relatively healthy. We enjoyed meals such as Fillet Steak with salad and French fries, or Eye fillet with caramelized onions, garlic prawns & red wine jus. There was a lovely Duck confit slow cooked with orange, papaya & poppy seed marmalade, served to your liking. Generally many chefs insist on serving it almost rare. The lobster ravioli with spinach, ginger & chive butter was 'sensational' according to the only guy at the table. The Thai-style baby octopus wontons with fresh chilli, coriander and coconut were also great. Click here to see the complete menu.

What really does it for this eatery is location. If you're lucky enough, as we were, to have a table at the water's edge, you can almost feel the sea spray as surfers paddle by on their boards. At the other end, you can observe bikini clad beauties soaking up the sun or strolling the golden sandy beach. Don't choose a table right at the edge unless you love the sun. You are guaranteed a tan if you do.

Open for Breakfast 7am to 11am, Lunch 12pm to 3pm, Tapas 3pm to 6pm and Dinner 6pm to late, 7 days a week. Bookings are essential Telephone 07 5520 7707.

If you feel like a light, healthy alternative without sitting in the restaurant, why not grab some fresh fish and chips or a refreshing salad at Pippies, the gourmet kiosk.
