Tauranga is the most populous city in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is a fantastic holiday destination to relax and see some wonderful natural beauty.

Most places don't open early, but we took our chances in the brisk morning air and walked along the parkland in search for some breakfast.

The Med Café (short for Mediterraneo Cafe) is a little cafe on the main shopping street in Tauranga. According to our research, this cafe is where the locals go for their morning-ritual coffee.

The simple breakfast menu is filled with your typical cafe fare of burgers, wraps, sandwiches, light meals and snacks. There is a variety of freshly-made foods to choose from in the window cabinet if you are unsure of what to get.

We decided to enjoy our first breakfast here on our New Zealand visit. The cafe looked clean with a simple, modern décor. The owner greeted us warmly when we walked in and we were pleased that it was not too crowded with morning 'coffee hunters'.

A simple breakfast was exactly what we wanted.

Due to jet lag, my friend was not feeling particular well, so she started with a hot tonic drink to ease the early symptoms of the cold. She said it was a good soothing drink and she felt better almost immediately.

The cafe was also happy to accommodate my unusual breakfast request. I wanted some carbs, so I asked for a small pasta dish. I was not quite sure what to expect.

The cafe delivered a special smoked chicken pasta topped with feta, roasted pumpkin and spinach in a creamy pesto sauce, served in a hot ceramic bowl. I was more than happy with it.

The pasta was certainly tasty and quite filling for breakfast and I did not eat anything until the late afternoon.

My friend ordered a Baby Bacon Bene and it was the most adorable-looking breakfast dish. The free-range egg was well poached and the bacon was plentiful on the toasted sesame bagel. It was enough to satisfy her appetite.

I noticed the Med Cafe is a popular meeting place with the locals, families, couples and friends to come together to have a meal and chat over a coffee.

We left the Med Cafe happy and content and ready to start our NZ holiday.
