See the timeless psychological thriller Medea as it comes to life on the stage at the Redlands Performing Arts Centre from 18 to 19 May 2022
The story of
Medea is a tragedy written by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides - one of the best-known and most influential dramatists in classical Greek culture. His play is based on the myth of Jason and Medea and particularly Medea's revenge against Jason for betraying her with another woman.
The performance will be brought to the life by
Shock Therapy Productions - a Gold Coast-based production company founded by actors/producers/directors Sam Foster and Hayden Jones.
I asked Sam Foster to tell us a little more about the production.
This production is based on a very powerful story. With themes like revenge, passion, gender, and power. Do you think the story of Medea is as relevant to audiences today as it was in ancient Greece?%%
Even though it was written 2500 years ago, we are still living in a world where women are treated very differently to men and although there have been many positive changes and steps towards gender equity, I think Euripides would agree there is still a long way to go. On top of this, themes of revenge, power, passion, reputation and ambition are just as relevant today as they were in Ancient Greece.
You are approaching the production through epic theatre, physical theatre and multiple role-playing. How rewarding is that approach for telling this story?%%
As contemporary theatre-makers, we weave a number of different conventions together to create our productions. Using multiple conventions is liberating as you can use various different techniques to tell the story in an engaging and exciting way. When you are not attached to any single convention then you are only limited by your imagination.
The show is part of a Queensland tour. What do you hope audiences will take from the performance.%%
Like all theatre, we hope that audiences are entertained, engaged and inspired by our work. It's been a rough couple of years for everyone and in particular, the live performance industry has suffered a lot.
We are looking forward to hitting the road again, doing what we love and sharing this powerful and rich story with people throughout Queensland.
Tickets to the show range from $20 - $25.00 and can be purchased
