Many people think that going to University is dry and boring (and it can be), but the University of Adelaide has found a novel way to prove that it need not be so.

Every year the the university's School of Mechanical Engineering hosts the free of projects that have been completed by their Honours students. The exhibition showcases the diverse range of skills and knowledge that is required to complete a project in fields such as mechanical, aerospace, sustainable energy, sports and mechatronic engineering. This year more than 200 students will be proudly displaying the imaginative results of their year's hard work.

MechExpo is enormously popular with school students who are considering going to university to study engineering, and the Goyder Pavilion of Wayville Showgrounds was full of them excitedly chatting with Honours students when I went last year. Visits for larger school groups are also possible by making prior arrangements with the organisers.

But anyone with an interest in technology and gadgets will love to browse the exhibits at the show. Each project is carefully displayed with explanatory signs, and students are eager to engage with visitors and discuss the merits of their designs. In the past there have been projects about a Hypersonic X-plane, a device for spine flexibility testing, a multifunctional lifter, cycling areodynamics, a solar air conditioner, and even improving the efficiency of a wine warehouse. The things students will do to get some free alcohol!

The free is only on show for the evening of October 30 and during the day on October 31, so make sure that you mark it in your diary - it really is worth a look if you have any interest in new technology. Students at the University of Adelaide can also take advantage of the free shuttle bus from the university to the showgrounds.
