It's winter in Sydney and by the time I get home from work, I really don't feel like cooking.

My friend suggested Vietnamese cuisine and I seconded that suggestion. Vietnamese food is one of my favourites because it's simple and tasty. Generally speaking, Vietnamese dishes are packed with colour, texture and flavour. In addition, the use of abundant fresh herbs instantly lift up the meal. It was the perfect hot winter meal choice without ruining my diet.

We wanted something casual and cheap. So we headed to Eastwood.

The suburb of Eastwood is big on Asian restaurants, so for any business to sustain in the area, good does not cut it anymore. All new business establishments have to be better and deliver more value than the previous one and the next-door competitors. Drive past Rowe Street in Eastwood at any time in the day or night and you'll always find a crowd on this popular eat-street.

One of the new food establishments is Me Pho. From the outside, it looks like an unpretentious, no-fuss eatery where the best thing is the their food.

The restaurant's decor is fairly plain and the only distinctive feature is the large black feature wall. The tables are tightly packed together but there is a large wooden communal table at the centre.

With lightening efficiency, a pot of complimentary tea was delivered to our table when we first sat down. A cup of hot tea was most welcomed on a cold winter night. The menu was self-explanatory and we made our orders quickly.

I ordered the Me Pho Signature Beef Pho and it came with a plate of raw beansprouts topped with fresh Thai holy basil.

The beef pho arrived quite quickly and at first look, we were surprised with the generous portion. The pho bowl took half of the table space!

The soup broth was light, delicious and aromatic. It was slow-cooked according to the family recipe handed down for generations. Me Pho's broth uses bone marrow and a special blend of herbs (star anise, ginger, cinnamon bark, cardamom, cloves and fennel) to give the soup base that unique sweet taste.

What is more, the pho was topped with three different types of beef! The slow cooked beef brisket, flank and finely sliced tender beef top side delivered different texture with the soft pho noodle. Everything was fresh and the portion generously huge. The gigantic pho bowl was enough to feed 2 and it was only $13.00!

We also ordered the popular Vietnamese Pancake. The sizable crispy pancake was stuffed with prawns, chicken, mung beans and carrots. It is served with fresh seasonal salads and special dipping sauce.

It was a delightful main meal. It was filled with healthy ingredients so it was not greasy. Again, this gigantic refreshing dish was only $13!

While I'm sad Pho Gia Hoi shop has gone, I'm really happy it's been replaced by Me Pho. The service here is efficient and friendly and the price is kept within an affordable range. So if you're looking for a good hearty winter meal, then Me Pho is easily my pick for Eastwood's best value winter dinner.
