McKinnon has a brand new library with access to the City of Glen Eira's collection of books, magazines and DVDs, as well as computer access and wi-fi. The new library is located next to McKinnon train station and also hosts the council's Youth Services program.
The new library opens on 29 March 2021. For residents of McKinnon and Ormond, it is a much-welcomed addition to the local area and fills a shop space that has been left vacant ever since the level crossing removal several years ago. It is a pop-up library while Bentleigh Library and Youth Services are closed for renovation until mid-2022. Whilst only temporary, hopefully, the local community will make good use of the new facility to convince the local council to continue with it indefinitely.
The space inside the library is not as large as that at Bentleigh Library but is similar in size to Caulfield Library. It is still large enough to have a study area and lounge seating. From Term 2 of 2021, Storytime and BabyTime sessions will commence at McKinnon Library, subject to government health restrictions.
After opening, the local council is trialling the following operating hours: Mon-Thu 8.30am to 7pm, Fri 8.30-6pm, Sat 10am-4pm and Sun 12pm-5pm. The return chute on McKinnon Road is open 24 hours a day. For more information about the new library and the Bentleigh Library re-development, visit the City of Glen Eira library website.
