Take a break and soak up the views at Maleny
McCarthy's Lookout at Maleny on Jinibara Country wasn't somewhere we were looking for specifically - rather, as we were enjoying a scenic drive through Maleny in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, it suddenly appeared. With a parking space available we indicated, turned in, and the rest, as they say, is history. McCarthy's Lookout is set on the suitably named Mountain View Road and provides beautiful views of the Blackall Range, over the Glasshouse Mountains and Moreton Bay.
McCarthy's Lookout provides visitors with views across the Glasshouse Mountains
To the left of the car park are signs with information on the Blackall Range and the Glasshouse Mountains. This information helped to satisfy some of our curiosity while enjoying the view, although it was only later that some research led us to information on the man the lookout point had been named after. Joseph McCarthy, who had farmed the area from the 1880s was the namesake, and some of his descendants still live in the area today.

To the right of these signs is the main feature of this stop - a large shelter with picnic tables in its corners and the opportunity to enjoy the mountain views in the shade. The entire lookout, car park, and the picnic areas are all suitable for wheelchair access.

There is one further picnic table outside to the right of the carpark. However, for other facilities, visitors need to travel just 5km to the East to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. This beautiful rainforest reserve has public toilets, drinking water, walks, a playground, and a tea room. Additionally, once the Covid19 restrictions ease further, their Discovery Centre will reopen.
For additional facilities visitors can stop in to the nearby Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve (the facilities and walks here are also free)
Although possibly not a day trip destination in its own right, McCarthy's Lookout is a lovely place to stop, perhaps have a picnic, and enjoy great views over the Glasshouse Mountains. Have you found stopped at this surprising lookout yet?
