Vivaldi was born in Venice in1678. His first 'job' was as a priest, known throughout town as 'Il Prete Rosso', the redheaded priest, but that lasted only one year.

He was born to be a musician and after years of study he was employed at the Ospedali della Pieta, an orphanage for abandoned girls left in the streets.

Many suggest it was established for daughters of noblemen, offspring of their various mistresses. In any event their musical talents were among the best in Venice, well known for their singing and their orchestral abilities.

These girls were the first to play and sing Vivaldi's music. He left a vast collection of music, much of it lay forgotten in a boarding school in Piedmont until 1926. It wasn't till 1951 that it was performed again in public.

This is the 21st anniversary of the 4MBS Festival of Classics, it continues until Sunday 1st June. St. John's Cathedral was the perfect venue for his well know 4 Seasons played on this occasion, on original instruments.

Long before Paganini, who was supposed to be possessed by the devil because of his amazing ability to master the violin, Vivaldi was writing music that was not only innovative, but requires a master of her craft, in this case his. Wayne Brennan is such a master.

Tama Matherson recited the sonnets that were written to complement the music. In Spring the birds could be heard singing, the lightening flashed before our eyes in Summer, the peace and tranquillity of Autumn was soothing, but the cracking of ice beneath our feet in Winter is something not heard in Brisbane, but well imagined.

The Gloria was chosen for the next major work of the afternoon. It was conducted by the Director of the Queensland Choir Kevin Power, a singers dream. He mouthed every word as he conducted with vigour and style. The cathedral was packed to the rafters and unfortunately this was the only performance of this event.

The festival continues until Sunday. To get tickets for other events call 38471717 or go online to 4MBS.com.au. For those who subscribe to the monthly guide you can check the date of the rebroadcast.
