We last left Thomas and the surviving Gladers escaping a terrible maze, only to emerge on the other side to find the world in ruins. Earth suffered an apocalyptic solar flare, which caused a terrible virus to spread across the population, to which the Gladers were immune. An organisation called had WCKD treated them like lab rats to find a cure, but they are free of all that now. Right?

The Scorch Trails has recently been released in cinemas, and is the sequel to last year's The Maze Runner . Based on a book trilogy by James Dashner, the teens must now travel across desert planes, city ruins, and mountainous terrain in order to escape WCKD.

Being immune from the virus does not protect the Gladers as well as you might think, for just because you can't get sick, does not mean you are safe from those who can.

The title also feels a bit redundant now, given that there is no maze, but The Scorch Trails is an exciting continuation of the series, with even more action packed scenes than the first. You see the ties of comradeship strengthen, but questions of trust also come into play, especially when new members join the group. The film inevitably loses the unique mystery of its predecessor, as we already know what the story is all about. It also falls into an old cliche when it comes to how the virus affects people.

While not living up to the originality of first in the series, it remains a great action film and makes you think about morality and ethics. Can the ends ever justify the means?
