I lived in Maylands for a number of years and thought I was pretty familiar with the area and its history, but I think I'm about to be surprised. Edith Cowan University research student Tina Askam spent two years doing "walking interviews" with local residents as part of the What Makes Maylands study. Now after many kilometres, photos, maps, cuppas and cakes, she has organised a weekend of free walking tours along with an exhibit detailing the results of her research. The will be held on the weekend of 2 - 3 May as a way to acknowledge the "generosity and general awesomeness of the people of Maylands."


The weekend of walks coincides with a worldwide event known as Jane's Walks , which are free citizen-led walking tours. The walks are named for urban activist and author Jane Jacobs , who believed that local people were the experts on the places they worked, lived and played. Last year more than 1,000 walks took place all over the world.


The weekend begins with a Welcome to Country by local Elder Aunty May McGuire followed by morning tea. The program features history, activism, sport and more. All walks leave from the Old Police Station, where there is also an interactive exhibit on display.
Saturday 2 May

11:00am Welcome to Country

2:00pm Maylands Sporting History
This 2.5 hour walk includes sites linked to Nyoongar sports, several very different indoor sports and aquatic sports as well as golf, lawn bowls, tennis, athletics, cycling, motorcycling, and aero sports.

2:00pm Residents, Resistance and the River
From the 1830s until now, resident action and resistance has been a key factor of what makes Maylands the place it is today.

Sunday 3 May

11:00am Scratch& Sniff Maylands: a Feast for the Senses
Maylands has a wonderful diversity of cultures and a whole lotta creative things going on. This walk will take us through some interesting and intriguing Maylands treats.

2:00pm Somewhat Walkable? Maylands
Maylands has a 'Walk Score' of 65 which means it is considered "somewhat walkable". What's your opinion?


All walks are free, family-friendly and wheelchair-accessible. No bookings are required, just turn up, wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to discover something new.
