Located within the Bower Buildings in Port Adelaide, Mayfair Bakery has been offering baked goods since it opened in 1870. The range of baked goods covers both familiar favourites and more unique products.

We liked that the chunks of steak in the Pepper Steak Pie were chunky while still being tender. The sauce had the appropriate degree of peppery flavour. The pastry encasing the filling was crisp and light with a scattering of cracked pepper to highlight the peppery flavour.

Compared to the pastry used for the Pepper Steak Pie, the one used in the Gourmet Sausage Roll had a slightly firmer texture. The sausage filling was not too soft and the seasoning gave it a delectable savoury flavour. If desired the pastry can be ordered with a serving of sauce.

Providing an option suitable for vegans, the Tomato and Basil Vegan Sausage Roll had a distinctive taste from its filling. The filling had a nice firmness to them. For those concerned about the texture of the pastry, it was just as nice as that used in the Gourmet Sausage Roll.

As its name suggests, the Native Wattle Seed Vegan Cake makes use of wattle seed to give the cake a unique flavour. The texture of the cake was light without being too dry and baked sufficiently to give it a golden-brown colour. Completing the presentation was a light dusting of icing sugar.

The nuts in the Macadamia & Hazelnut Nutella Frangipani are what gave the pastry its crunchy texture and nutty flavour. Nutella provided the pastry with a hint of chocolatey flavour without being too sweet. Like the Wattle Seed Cake, the pastry was finished with a light dusting of icing sugar.
