When you are travelling with another family, especially when there are multiple children, finding accommodation can be a bit of a nightmare. Will there be enough bedrooms? Will they fight over bunk beds? Is there more than one bathroom and toilet? Is there safe space for kids to run around in and a nice place for parents to hang out?

Ten minutes south of Margaret River in the town of Witchcliff, you will find Maya Retreat on the Redgate Farm. The Retreat is actually two separate houses joined with a covered deck, providing five bedrooms, two bathrooms, two separate toilets and two huge living spaces (both with Foxtel). The living areas in both houses are air conditioned.

We were two families travelling for a few nights in Margaret River, three adults and four children aged between four and eight. Our requirements were cleanliness, space, functionality and preferably a good divide between generations. The Maya Retreat provided everything we needed.

The main house, while obviously a few years old, has a newly renovated kitchen and bathroom. The carpets are new, the walls are freshly painted, and the bed linen good quality. The kitchen is large enough for a number of people to be in there and not lead to divorce, and there is both a large indoor table (seating 8) and an outdoor setting on the deck which seats 10. Thoughtful extras include a dual-drawer dishwasher, coffee bags instead of the usual instant, a couple of board games, and a decent selection of wine and champagne glasses, probably a necessity given the region.

Outside there is a mammoth gas BBQ which was spotlessly clean and could feed half the town, wooden decking around the house (great for scooting) and a large, new trampoline. In a separate gated grassy garden, stands a cubby house on stilts.

The grass is long and soft and there is a wooden fence barely metres away separating the house from a herd of very pretty black and white cows.

A point to make: this is a working farm. There are cows and sheep and both make noise and poo. Poo attracts flies. Where there are flies there are spiders. If spider webs (of which there were plenty) and flies (ditto) are an issue, then maybe a working farm isn't your best choice. Apart from the livestock, Redgate Farm is also a tree farm, and there is a 70 acre bluegum plantation you can walk through (we even saw a number of kangaroos).

The annex looks like a converted shed with its corrugated walls and ceiling, but the air conditioner cools the main room and two of the bedrooms. The bathroom is new, and there is a large laundry with washer and dryer. While there is no kitchen in the annex, it has an enormous living area with a huge couch (and Foxtel) and a huge dining table, perfect for kids to claim for a craft and toy table. All the beds in the annex are queen, but as in the main house, the linen is very good quality and the mattresses firm. All beds have electric blankets.

It is a very child-friendly place, with the bunk beds, a portable cot (and plenty of space in the main bedroom for cots) and high chair. While the gardens are gated, there are electric fences (clearly marked). They're not going to do serious damage if you accidentally touched them, but it would be wise to be aware of where they are.

While there is nothing within walking distance, it's a few minutes drive to the tiny town of Witchcliff (vintage stores, cookie shop); ten minutes to Redgate Beach, full of enormous boulders and great for kids to paddle and chase crabs; and about ten minutes to the town of Margaret River. Being south of the town also means you're close to most of caves in the region.

Pets (ie. dogs) are allowed which is great for pet owners but it did smell a bit doggy when we arrived. Despite this, it was very clean and there was no visible hair, but noticeable for a non-dog family. There is even a dedicated gated area alongside the house, completely covered with a kennel and bowls waiting for the family pet.

All water on site is rain water so you need to be considerate with how much you use. It tastes fine, but you still might want to buy bottle water for drinking.

Overall, Maya Retreat is a fabulous place for a multiple or extended families to base themselves for a holiday in Margaret River. Almost everything has been thought of (they even provide little bathrooms products and soaps) and it is a very comfortable and pleasant place to stay.
