Mavis Phillips (nee Walley) Collection
The Mavis Phillips (nee Walley) Collection is a beautiful array of photographs taken of Noongar life from a Noongar perspective from one of Australia's earliest Indigenous photographers.
These photos, taken as early as the 1930s by Mavis, capture a rare glimpse of the life of her family and community in Goomalling.
The story that these photos tell is touching and heartbreaking as they detail the reality of life for Aboriginal people during those times.
The staff at the Perth Centre for Photography are very friendly and eager to explain the story behind the photos and artifacts from Mavis' life.
The centre is open Wednesday-Saturday 10am-4pm. Mavis's exhibition will be on display until the 31st July.
