Mavericks on the Bay is a waterfront restaurant and bar, located at d'Albora Marinas at Nelson Bay. You can't get much closer to the water than this venue, with the clear waters of Port Stephens just metres from your table. The restaurant has windows that fold right back, to take in the fresh sea air and reveal the views out to the luxury boats in the marina.

This venue is popular with locals and tourists alike, as it has a lively atmosphere, sports on the TV, local fresh seafood straight from the ocean and colourful cocktails that end up on Instagram photos, every night of the week. If you are visiting the region, then follow your senses to the waterfront and enjoy a seafood extravaganza with a view...

My husband and I walked in on a Friday evening and the staff at the front door gave us a warm welcome and showed us to a window table (which we felt lucky to get, as it was so busy). We were given menus, a rundown of the Specials and told how to order at the bar. We both enjoyed the buzz of the venue straight away - so don't visit this venue on a weekend night if you are after a quiet dinner for two, as the atmosphere is loud and lively.

The menu was extensive and mouth-watering for all seafood-lovers, with 3-tier seafood platters, oysters, scallops, crab, squid and salmon, as well as other bistro favourites such as steak, pasta and schnitzel. There were also two Specials to choose from - the Sushimi Plate for $29 and Steamed Australian Mussels for $25. It all looked so good, we didn't know what to choose. We ordered some drinks and took some time to peruse the menu...

After much discussion, we decided to share the Sashimi Platter with Kingfish, Nelson Bay Tuna and Atlantic Salmon. For mains, my husband chose the Seafood Mixed Grill, while I picked the Warm Duck Salad. When our meals arrived, they literally took our breath away. Each plate looked fresh, inviting and well-presented.

The Sashimi Platter was a stunning way to start the meal, with melt-in-the-mouth slices which we dipped into soy sauce. The Seafood Mixed Grill kept my husband quiet for a long time, as he savoured every mouthful and appreciated the flavours. His only criticism was the BBQ king prawns were hard to eat with the shell stuck to the meat, but it was a small criticism in a spectacular meal. My Warm Duck Salad is one that I would order again and again - the braised duck was flavoursome and the hoisin dressing was simply divine. We weren't sure what to expect when we walked into Mavericks on the Bay, and we were impressed by the flavours, quality and service.

Mavericks on the Bay was a pleasant surprise. When the restaurant was full, the sound of people enjoying themselves with laughter and conversation created a celebratory, social atmosphere, which we enjoyed. After a wonderful evening, we reluctantly left there feeling full, happy and satisfied. We have put Mavericks on the Bay on our "favourites" restaurant list for the Nelson Bay area - we could easily go back there again to have the same meals again, or literally try everything on the menu!

Why don't you give it a try for yourself, this weekend?
