Matthew Bourne’s extraordinary dance production of Edward Scissorhands has touched the hearts of audiences worldwide and it's coming to Australia from September 27 this year.
Based on the classic Tim Burton movie and featuring the music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, this bittersweet story of an unusual and unique boy left alone in an unfamiliar world has been cleverly reimagined in the dance production, filmed live in March 2024 at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff.
Liam Mower’s performance as Edward is an absolute stand-out. He has captured the character’s innocence and awkwardness through his movement and expression. Stunning choreography is all that is needed to tell the story, with two memorable moments being the magical “Ice Dance” between Edward and Kim (played by Ashley Shaw) - breathtaking and haunting, and the beautifully executed “Edwardo the Barber” scene which is full of wonder and joy.
Visually, the production is magical. The set and costumes, designed by Lez Brotherston, bring Tim Burton’s quirky world to life, drawing the audience into an immersive experience. The use of projections and special effects adds depth and mood to the production. Bourne has sensitively balanced the sad, light and humorous moments, leaving the audience spellbound.
The production has received high praise for its wonderful translation on stage and in dance of this supernatural story and it will equally delight those who remember the original and those who are seeing it for the first time.
