Located in the historical town of Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, is no stranger to locals and tourists from all over the world. It is one of the oldest and most popular shave ice for over half a century now.

was founded by Mamoru Matsumoto in 1951. Born in Hawaii but raised in Hiroshima-ken, Mamoru returned to Hawaii later to find work. He began a grocery business with his wife and expanded their business to operate a shave ice stand after the birth of their three children. As business grew and the couple got older, the business was taken over by their son Stanley. Today, Stanley and his wife turned the groceries to T-shirts, souvenirs, and snacks while still maintaining the shave ice business.

We decided to visit the store during our vacation after reading much raved reviews about it. At first glance from the outside, it looked small but still very well maintained given that it has been more than 50 years. Nothing much has changed on the exterior since except additional benches and lighting.

Tourists and customers can be seen happily slurping away their shave ice while having a chat or posing for photos.

Since it was famous for the best shave ice on the island, we were not too surprised at the long queue but the line was moving pretty fast. Given so many choices of flavors and combinations, it took us a few minutes to decide our orders.

The Rainbow combinations shave ice had strawberry, lemon and pineapple flavor. It cost $2.50 for a small cup and $2.75 for a large one. You get to also add-on with ice-cream, beans or condensed milk.

We also tried the Matsumoto combinations shave ice which had the flavor of lemon, pineapple and coconut. They were worth the wait especially on a hot sunny day in Hawaii. We loved our fluffy shave ice with sweetened flavor but we can't make any comparison with why this is the best since we've not tried it else where. Nonetheless, we'll let the ongoing flow of customers and their happy faces attest to Matsumoto's popularity.

Inside the store, you can browse and purchase various souvenirs of Hawaii and even Matsumoto's merchandise such as T-shirts, key chains, magnets, mugs, and more.

It's a nice stopover place to chill and relax in the North Shore area before continuing our drive to explore the island.
