Do you remember , the official mascot of the 1982 Commonwealth Games held in Brisbane, Queensland? She stole the game's opening ceremony with a wink and her trademark long eyelashes. She flirted with the crowd of about 50,000 people, even with the late Duke of Edinburgh. She swivelled her perfectly-proportioned head as a forklift took her around the track. The moment when her pouch opened allowing pairs of Australian children to bound out was just a moment no Australian will ever forget.

is arguably the most publicised Big Thing of Australia that can still be seen proudly standing in front of Traveston PUMA service station on Bruce Highway, 160km north of Brisbane just before Gympie.

After retiring from 1982 Commonwealth Games, this 13-metre-tall kangaroo moved to Gold Coast in 1984, where she ended up at the entrances to the theme park Wet 'n' Wild Water World, known then as Cade's County Waterpark. She remained there for 25 years where she kept a watchful eye over swimmers until 2009 , when she went up for sale, and was promptly snapped up by Matilda Fuel Services, owned today by Puma Energy Australia.

From packed stadiums to water slides to a petrol station, Matilda has lived a remarkable life with the sort of class and grace others can only dream of. She will be turning 50 when the Olympic Games come to Brisbane in 2032. What a great way to celebrate the gold age, Tilly!
