If you love looking good but hate the fast fashion cycle, listen up! Material Pleasures in Fyshwick has been fighting the battle against fashion waste since 1987 (talk about ahead of the game!) and they've got the art of providing stylish, quality pre-loved clothing down to a fine art.
The Barrier Street shopfront, complete with punchy retro styling and flower boxes, appeared in 2009 after many years of selling at markets. It's a carefully curated, beautiful space so if you like the grungy, down and dirty op-shop experience, this might not be your cup of tea. On the other hand, if you prefer clean, fresh, organised shelves, head on in and let the fashion parade begin!
Stocking contemporary and recent season designer items, the team select only the best and most interesting pieces from established and up-and-coming designers. You know there will be some absolute treasures lurking on the racks whenever you visit and the fun is in the hunt. With plenty of changing rooms, helpful, friendly staff and a huge range to choose from, you could easily spend a few hours putting together a whole new wardrobe. The one thing you won't spend too much of is money - the prices are very reasonable by Canberra op-shop prices and the items are all flawless.
While much of the shop is women's wear, there was a surprisingly well-stocked men's shelf too. While a lot of men's second hand clothing seems to be poor quality, the Material Pleasures menswear was fantastic and even my very fussy husband was lured into the joys of op-shopping the morning we visited.
With fashion accounting for 10% of global greenhouse emissions and a huge proportion of landfill, there really is no excuse to keep being part of the problem when Material Pleasures offers such a great solution. Even if you don't love op-shopping, the experience is much more like a traditional boutique experience so give it a try - you're guaranteed to not only feel good but look good too.
