Song and dance and lots of food
This year the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton will open its doors once again to the biggest pancake festival around – Maslenitsa. This is one of the most important celebrations in Russian and Slavic cultural tradition. Maslenitsa is 'seeing winter off'; Time of hopes, dreams and making plans.
Maslenitsa at Royal Exhibition Building is organised and run by the Russian Ethnic Council of Victoria. This year, like several years before, Maslenitsa will be a time and place for pancakes (blini) with a variety of fillings, Slavic food (lots of it), craft and arts stalls, song, dance and music performances.
Entry is free, but please take some money with you. I promise, even the sight of the food will make your mouth water.
There will be something to do for the whole family, from young to old. Kids activities will include braiding, face painting, arts competitions, etc. If you are game enough, you can join in Slavic traditional dancing and procession (Horovod) to end the celebration. A final straw (excuse the pun) will be burning a straw doll of Maslenitsa, saying your thanks and making your most important wish for the season to come.
