M.A.S.H The TV Series - Review

M.A.S.H for those who of you who have been living under a rock for the last thirty years was the 11 year long running series about the doctors, surgeons and nurses who took care of the wounded in the Korean war at the 4077th M.A.S.H unit . M.A.S.H stands for Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. The series comes after the highly successful movie staring Donald Sutherland and Eliot Gould.

The stories follows the tales of Hawkeye, the legendary surgeon of 4077th army hospital, his friends and rivals BJ Hunicutt , John McIntrye and Major Burns, Major Houlihan, Radar O'Reilly and his commanding officer Henry Blake. There are lots of other different characters as there were 11 series, but the above are the ones that stick in my memory.

The series has its ups and downs in terms of narrative, ironically the series went on longer than the Korean War and the Vietnam War (many saw the series as an allegory for the Vietnam War as well as the problems in Korea) .

What the series succeeds in doing is showing how damaging the experience of war is for all involved. Ironically the fact that the series went on so long adds to the poignancy of the idea that war ages you because by the end of the series many of the characters leave the series with streaks of grey in the hair.

The series is let down a little bit because it sometimes pushes the comedy of the situation a bit too far and the series also lacks the crazy element that made the original movie such a hit.

However M.A.S.H helped define a generation of TV and still is remembered in the hearts of millions as their favourite show, for that reason alone you should give it ago!
