M.A's Dumpling Den

M.A's Dumpling Den is a popular little restaurant on Grattan Street in Carlton (on the opposite side of the road to Tigerlily Cafe , Tutto and Nasi Lemak House ).

I had my first steamed vegetarian dumplings here. They were piping hot and surprisingly flavoursome inside. The serving size (12) was generous, and probably could (should?) have been shared.

I enjoyed them by themselves, with soy sauce and with chilli oil.

I'd like to say that they were beautifully presented, and for all intents and purposes they were. But there's no getting around the fact that steamed dumplings are ugly. They kind of look like skinned rodents to me.

As well as the real stuff, there were lots of non-alcoholic beverages to choose from:

As interesting as the avocado smoothie sounded, I settled on the mango kind. It was ice-cold, deliciously sweet and not too milky.
Despite order dockets piling up in the kitchen, my meal was served in no time at all.

M.A's Dumpling Den had a pleasant ambiance – it wasn't as tranquil or ornately beautiful as Wang Fu Jing's , but I liked it. And even though the restaurant was full, it didn't feel crowded and it wasn't overly noisy.

Prices were fair and service was excellent. I'd return.
