For many South-East Queenslanders, Maryborough is simply a stepping stone enroute to Hervey Bay. On Saturday 27 October the public will discover Maryborough's hidden treasures in the form of its domestic, commercial, and civic architecture. Interesting stories of its cultural heritage will also be told through guided and self-guided tours available free of charge.

The inaugural Maryborough Open House will be supported by walking tours, bus tours, guest speakers and fact sheets available online . A photographic competition will be held to judge photos taken on the day itself.

Gatakers Artspace will be the location of a lamplight market and a wine and cheese tasting, while viewing a photographic exhibition of local heritage buildings and listening to guest speakers on heritage topics.

As a welcome guest of Maryborough City you will soon be convinced of its claim to be one of Queensland's major heritage cities. Here are some fine examples of this claim:

Maryborough Court House

The longest serving masonry courthouse in Queensland, it was built in 1877 in the Victorian Italianate style. Queensland timbers such as cedar and silky oak are a feature of the joinery and furnishings. Visitors will have access to the original courtroom on the first floor.

Government Bond Store

The Maryborough Bond Store is now a museum featuring relics of immigration and industry. It was designed by the Government architect, Charles Tiffin, and the lower level retains many of its original features from 1864, including liquor barrels.
DTM Timbers Old Green Mill

Richard Hyne's mill has been serving the Maryborough district for over 100 years. Timbers were sourced from Fraser Island in its logging heyday. It is part of an industrial estate which once included Walkers Shipyards. The new owners process plantation timber.

Eco-Queenslander House

This renovated traditional building highlights many eco friendly features – recycled materials, water tanks, ceiling fans and solar power.

The Engineers Arms Hotel

This early Maryborough pub built in 1889 is rumoured to be haunted. It was named for its patrons, workers from the nearby Walkers' Engineering Works and Foundry. It has had many different uses since it ceased operating in 1951, but retains many of its original features.

St Mary's Roman Catholic Church

Count the number of grotesques which guard this church. As with many colonial churches it was built in stages, the first of which was designed by Charles Tiffin. This stage was completed in 1872. Three other architects oversaw the subsequent additions and alterations.
