Arts and crafts have been around so long that it sometimes is a wonder where it all began. The original beginnings were from an international movement which began in Britain, flourishing through Europe and North America between 1880 and 1910. The
Arts and Crafts Movement was more confined to decorative and fine arts which included traditional craftsmanship using simple ideas.
Yet we can go back even further to the ancient Egyptians who used art as a functional requirement rather than for beautifying purposes.
Egyptian art was mainly concerned with the continuation of life and thus their artists created protective amulets, tomb paints, funeral jars, hieroglyphics, magical enchantments on papyrus, ivory grave goods and so on.
For a trend, a creation, a passion and an achievement that has been aeons in the making, it is still one of the great pleasures that can be enjoyed today by any age group.
Maryborough, Queensland is holding its annual
Heritage CraftFest from the 2nd to 4th November this year. This will be its tenth year and will again be held in the Maryborough City Hall.
This year a community challenge will be held in conjunction with the CraftFest. People are asked to make a Christmas stocking which will be judged on its creativity and workmanship. The stockings will be included as an addition to the care packages which are sent to the Australian Troops overseas. What a great idea!
Each year, the
Maryborough Artisans Inc . select a group or charity from the local area to be the beneficiary of CraftFest and profits from door takings can be used to buy equipment for that organisation.
This year,
Yoorana Women's Shelter has been chosen. Yoorana looks after Maryborough, Hervey Bay and surrounding areas in supporting accommodation for women and their children who are escaping domestic and family violence. Yoorana is funded by the
Department of Communities . They also provide counselling, information, referral, court support and auspice, which is a children's programme in
Hervey Bay .
As usual, the CraftFest will be showcasing work by Artisans which will incorporate both traditional and modern crafts such as lacemaking, crochet, sewing in all forms, felting, jewellery, woodwork, bears, soft toys, glass art and more. This will also be a good opportunity to purchase Christmas presents for friends and family.
For more information on the event, you can check out their
Facebook page or send a message to the organisers via the Message Tab on this page. Entry is $3.00 per person.
