A leisurely one-hour drive to 13 Leith Road, Montrose, took us to the doorstep of what looked like a lovely country home, where Mary Eats Cake is housed. It's a lot bigger on the inside than you'd imagine, with a couple of function rooms, and the main tea rooms to utilise or you could sit outdoors when the weather is fine. The Cafe is open for takeaways bright and early.

First, we had a mini tour of the Cafe, then we were given a scone-making demonstration by the pastry chef, before we sat down to a preview of six different flavours of scones that will make their debut over the coming weeks of the Scone Festival which runs for the whole month of June 2024.

The teas ain't half bad either. There was Raspberry, Lemon and Earl Grey served in gorgeous glass teapots, and I could not stop drinking the beautifully brewed Earl Grey. The three sweet scone flavours lined up at the back were Chocolate Brownie, Pandan, and Apple Crumble and the savoury were Pumpkin and Chive, Pizza and Pierogi flavours. Of interest - the Pierogi was the competition-winning flavour, with potato, bacon and cheese in the scone mix.

There were a variety of condiments to suit the different scones. The Pierogi, for instance, you could have with butter and whipped feta. There were also chutneys to put on our savoury scones, though mind you, they tasted perfect just as they were with no topping. Every scone was light and fluffy, try as I might, I could not fit in any more than 3 large scones. Luckily my plus one and I had half each of the six flavours, so we were able to cover all six on offer. The Pandan scone - pandan, generally associated with Southeast Asian flavours, came with its own coconut cream instead of regular cream, and kaya jam aka coconut jam, a sweet spread made from a base of coconut milk, eggs and sugar. Mary Eats Cake has thought of everything.

The first weekend of the scone festival (1 & 2 Jun 2024) had offerings of Lavender and Blueberry and Mediterranean scones on the Saturday and Tiramisu and Jalapeño Popper scones on the Sunday. Here's a heads-up of what you can look forward to in the coming weeks from Wednesdays to Sundays, to enjoy the elegant and romantic decor of the Montrose establishment, or you could go to the Brunswick branch at 558 Sydney Road. You might just want to keep going back over and over again, to try out all the flavours encapsulated in a light and airy scone.
