Flowers everywhere, even in your jam and cream
High tea made all the better with flowers and rustic brickwork. This is what you will find at Mary Eats Cake on Sydney Road in Brunswick, where there is a little oasis of calm and elegance in the midst of a crazy shopping strip.
High tea is served each day along with paddle boards of savoury or sweet options. Their slogan is "A unique and indulgent high tea experience with vintage tea ware, flowers, fluffy scones, freshly baked treats, and artisan teas."
Originally a cafe, Mary Eats Cake was inspired by Marie Antoinette and her famous comment "let them eat cake". Wanting to westernise it a little bit more, the name Marie was changed to Mary and the business name was thus created.
High tea is a mixture of sweet and savoury delicacies with vegetarian options available. Mary's scones are light and fluffy and served with delicious homestyle jam and cream decorated with rose and flower petals.
You can also choose a sweet paddle board with a selection of a few sweet treats of the day and of course, their famous scones. Alternatively, select a savoury paddle board.
We opted for the vegetarian choice and received a little beetroot savoury tart, a small bowl of Asian fusion salad and a selection of sandwiches with gourmet fillings. The make their own tea and this is also served alongside the high tea.
Mary Eats Cake takes bookings for parties and special events and although you can drop in (we did), reservations are recommended to ensure you receive a table.
