Martin Bend Wetland

Located just east of the township of
Berri , Martin Bend wetland is a River Murray backwater - the site of a rehabilitation project aiming to restore a more natural wetting and drying regime. It provides habitat for native animals, reduces the impacts of floods and improves water quality.
In 2003, a loop walk was established by the Lions Club as an extension of the walking trail from the marina to Martin Bend. The 3.5-kilometre loop walk showcases the abundance of wildflowers and birds in the area with 13 interpretive signs along the way. A lot of information has been compiled and I'm sure you'll learn something if you take the time to stop and read.
Among the numerous resting spots along the trail, I found the woodcutters rest rather interesting. It is dedicated to the early woodcutters who provided wood first to fuel the engines during the riverboat era and later to fire the pumps for the great irrigation scheme. Some of the huge red gum tree stumps can be seen around this spot.
So, next time you're in the Riverland, do consider a stopover at
Berri and be sure to meander through this tranquil wetland at your own pace. A trail map is available for free from the visitor information centre to help you navigate your way.
