As a first time buyer, where do you start? It's a tricky road navigating the art world. That's why this April, MARS is hosting Art Start; an event that'll answer any and all questions you have as an aspiring collector. Some of your questions may relate to questions about buying art online. Your queries will be answered by art world experts like Diego Ramirez a young artist; Vinaya Marriott, an up-and-coming gallerist; Nikita Le Messurier, an emerging collector; and Lucy Foster, a young auction house specialist. Together these four speakers will share their unique experiences in the art world.

Panel talks will be followed by an informal cocktail hour on the MARS rooftop, and you'll have the opportunity to tour the MARS stockroom and meet the speakers. This event is perfect for young and aspiring art collectors and young future collectors across Melbourne. Representatives from Art Money, MARS Gallery, and Leonard Joel will be in attendance to share their experiences and insights on starting an art collection.

Diego Ramirez - Melbourne-based artist and writer will share his unique insight into how an artist collects. Originally hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, Ramirez has been living and working in Melbourne since 2008.
Vinaya Marriott - an art consultant at MARS Gallery. Marriott has held a range of curatorial, administrative, and collection management positions in cultural organisations both in Melbourne and abroad.
Lucy Foster - a hotshot auction house art expert from Leonard Joel who will discuss how to buy at auction, and some pitfalls and traps to avoid.
Nikita Le Messurier - a young Melbourne-based art collector, who will talk about the practicalities of shopping for and collecting art, and how she uses Art Money to finance her collection.

Andy Dinan, Director at MARS Gallery believes everyone can start an art collection. It's no longer just for the wealthy elite. All you need is the will to learn and especially knowing where to look. You may be surprised as to how attainable and affordable building an art collection can be. "Developing an eye for art and an ability to read artworks are the first things we educate young collectors in. Our mission is to provide the next generation of collectors with new opportunities to build diverse collections. Culturally diverse collections and ones that recognise the importance of female voices are always the most interesting" said Andy.
