Update October 3rd 2012
The fate of the bookstore is safe. Marriott Books is under new management and will be renamed shortly by the current owner/s.
From the beginning of April until Mid-June, when the fate of the treasured bookstore will be decided (will it just change hands or will it be gone forever?), Marriott Books in Lawnton is having a 50% off 'closing down' sale. Yes, sadly the owners are downsizing their business and have decided to sell-off their Lawnton branch, continuing with their branches at Stafford Heights and Corinda.
This second-hand book store is located on busy Gympie Road; amongst the many (and boy do I mean many) car yards, mechanics and car-part retailers. It shares its address, 666 Gympie Road Lawnton, with at least three other businesses in the square-like lot (more car yards, mechanics and car-part retailers), but if you're looking for it you won't miss it.
Walls of books
Another wall of books
When it comes to Marriott Books, looks are deceiving. It appears to be just a small book store; but after the first room is another and another and another and another, filled on all sides, from floor to ceiling (well almost) with second-hand books. It isn't cramped either. All walkways are clear and there is enough room to browse comfortably with others around you.
A comfortable browsing section
Marriot Books uses a category system to organise the book layout and this works quite well with sub-categories, making it easier to pin down that book you've been hunting for. There are the more expected categories such as: Music, Health, Science, Reference, History, True Crime, Fantasy, Literature and Children's, but then there are the more unusual or uncommon, but not unexciting, categories such as: Art Needlework, Landscape Architecture, Architecture Photography, Transport, Religion, Esoteric, Myths and Legends, French Literature, Botany, Agriculture, Espionage, Archaeology and Shakespeare. Yes, good ol' Willy has a section all to himself.
Now, like me, you probably want to take advantage of this 50% sale, but feel conflicted with the fact that this grand bookstore may be closing down. Never fear, come June it may still be a book store, just owned by somebody else. Marriott Books at Lawnton is closed every Monday and all Public Holidays. It is open 9am - 5pm Tuesday to Friday, 9am - 4pm Saturdays and 10am - 3pm every Sunday. So, grab your dollars and head out to Lawnton to grab yourself some book bargains.
