Libraries offer so much more than just books
Most people know that your local library is the place to go if you want to join a book club. Marrickville Library offers both day and night time bookgroups, held at Marrickville and Stanmore branches. It also offers a Chinese language book club and a Forensic Book Club.
Everyone knows you can head to the local library for Storytime for the littlies to listen to some stories and do some craft. Marrickville Library offers Craft Social Group gatherings for the not so little as well. Meeting fortnightly on Wednesdays (from Feb 27th) at 10am - 1pm, it's a great opportunity to learn new crafts and socialise. Crafts covered include beading, embroidery, cross stitch, candle wicking and patchwork quilting.
They also have the very social Knit Together group, which is a knitting and crochet group where you can make squares for the Wrap with Love project, or make something for yourself. There are held at Stanmore (Mon 10am - 1pm), Dulwich Hill (every second Wed of the month 10am - 1pm) and Marrickville (every second Mon 10am - 1pm and every second Thurs 1.30pm - 4.30pm). Wrap with Love project is a not for profit organisation that sends donated knitted blankets around the world to those in need of shelter and warmth. You can commit to one square - a 28th of a blanket, thus the ability to work as a group.
Marrickville and Stanmore both offer Movie Clubs, for those that want to watch free movies with a like minded audience. See details here)
Marrickville Library also offers one off interest events for both kids and adults alike. It's always worth grabbing their flyers on school holiday activities for both primary and high school students - usually free but always something different.
This year for the New Lunar Year celebrations, they are offering a Tai Chi lesson, among other things. They're also running a programme for Diabetes awareness, an hour long talk to be held in 6 different languages over the course of February.
It's always worth checking the website or notice board to see what else is on the horizon.
So if you find yourself with some spare time, but not a huge amount of spare cash to amuse yourself with. Head to Marrickville library and start a new hobby, join a social group or attend a one off lecture. You never know what doors it will open...
