A farewell dinner on Wednesday with a neighbour who was moving out (today Fri 28 Feb), reminded me of how much I love the Turkish food at
Marmara Restaurant at 68 Chapel St, Windsor. I'm spoilt for choice along the strip of Chapel Street, from Windsor to South Yarra which is my 'hood', where cafes and restaurants abound. Traditionally along Chapel Street, all the cafes are closed by 4pm, and the restaurants, many of which do not open during the day, come into play for the evening from around 5pm onwards.
Marmara Restaurant is no different, operating from Sunday to Thursday from 5-10pm, staying open later by half an hour on Fridays and Saturdays.
There is no food service on Tuesdays when it is closed. A fully licensed restaurant, there's no BYO and you can make your reservation or order online on the
website . If there is space available, they're happy to accept walk-ins.
For my neighbour, the love of his life is his Cavoodle, he's named 'Google'. If a restaurant does not accept dogs (sitting outside of course), he won't go there. Amazingly, Marmara and many other restaurants along Chapel Street, welcome pooches, with some having bowls of water on the ready for them. Established in 1980, Marmara is one of the oldest restaurants in Melbourne and is still run by the same family. May they never change, as every time I've been there, the food is simply consistently good! You get the finest flavours of Turkiye and the Mediterranean, whether you're craving tender lamb, fresh seafood, or their famous mixed grill. A sucker for seafood, I can never go past the prawns, and actually had grilled king prawn skewers on a bed of rice, some fresh salad, and a wedge of lemon. Alas, and I'm crying about it and kicking myself in the butt for not checking the camera because my image was contaminated - Ugh! And my 4 skewers with 2 plump and tender king prawns per skewer looked so good! Not to mention tasting phenomenal! Well, at least you get to see my neighbour's dinner - and that meat was tender as! We also had some dolmades which were slightly tart and perfect to the bite, and a rice pudding for afters, which was quite plain, considering all the deep flavours on
the menu .
2025 Ramadan & Weeknight Specials
Eating kerbside on Chapel Street is very pleasant if you love the atmosphere of the precinct swirling around you and filling your every pore. I just love it - sitting there relaxed, chatting with friends and family, watching the world go by while enjoying great food. It's very addictive, very pleasant, and good for the soul. I'd not hesitate to recommend Marmara Restaurant to absolutely anyone! Marmara also has weeknight specials offered on specified days and is not available with any other offers. Bookings are recommended as these nights are naturally popular, with the specials available for dine-in and takeaway. **Monday is Mixed Grill Night at $26 (normally $37.50), Wednesday is Chicken Main Night at $22 (normally $32.50) and Thursday is Iskender Night at $19 (normally $29.50). As a Chapel Street local, you get to know the various specials night of the restaurants that dot the precinct, making it a bit easier on the pocket.
This being the holy month of Ramadan that generally runs from Thu 27 Feb to Sat 29 Mar 2025 (these are not necessarily the dates/length of time the Ramadan Banquets are available at Marmara) - Marmara has a specially curated Ramadan Banquet and you can make your
booking here . At $49pp (Sun-Thu), see the menu below. You can also have add-ons like calamari $7, prawns $8 and cutlet $9. Iskender, Skewered Lamb Fillets, Skewered Chicken Fillets, and Lamb Kofta already sound like scrumptious main courses. Plus of course, there's Entree, Side Dishes, and Dessert.
