There are many eateries in Yea, but none as marvellous as Marmalades. It's not just their food, but the ambience and history of the premises.

Marmalades is housed in a 132-year-old building that was originally a general store, established in 1887 as Purcell's general store.

The name E.S. Purcell, Grocer, still appears over the front entrance.

The building and much of the interior are National Trust classified and as soon as you enter, you are transported back to much earlier times.

Marmalades is foremost a café and their menu, which specialises in focaccias and burgers are taste delights.

There are four eating areas inside and a wisteria laden courtyard garden area, thus never seeming crowded when full.

Apart from the serving counter, all the other wall space has displays of produce, crafts, knick-knacks and books, certainly giving the appearance of what it was like in times past.

The food? Delicious with the best chips I have ever tasted.

My ham, cheese and tomato focaccia was piping hot and tasty. My favourite lime malted milk was like nectar to me as it is hard to get malt in your milkshakes these days.

I also had to try their cappuccino. Hot and very nice.

They are open for breakfast and lunch and children are catered for.

All the staff are very friendly and willing to impart the history of the building, even handing out a pamphlet on its history.

They also operate a husband daycare centre.

The building and décor is a step back in time, but the food isn't.
