[SECTION]Markets that are worth the trip[/SECTION]

There are lots of markets around Brisbane and the surrounding area, but most of them are interesting if you in the local area and want to pop in for a snack or your week's supply of fruit & vegetables.

Then there are markets that are worth travelling across town or even out of town to visit. These are markets that have the perfect combination of stalls at the right location to make the journey worth the effort.

What makes a market worth the effort to travel to?

For myself a great market has a combination of factors. First of all it should have a combination of different stalls and should have a great selection of food stalls as well. In this way you visit for both the products and stay to enjoy a meal. This means that the ideal market should stay open during meal times. I wouldn't cross town for a market that is winding up around midday, as far too many of the markets in Brisbane do.

The market is ideally located near other places of interest so that going to the market is part of the adventure. So here are 5 markets worth making a trip to visit.

[SECTION]Redcliffe Jetty Markets[/SECTION]

The top of the list has to be the Redcliffe Jetty Markets . Redcliffe is a great destination in itself and on weekends it becomes the hive activity for people who live on or around the peninsula. If this beautiful beach side community wasn't attraction enough, on Sundays Redcliffe Parade turns into a market.

There are of course lots of fruit and vegetables along with food stalls. But Redcliffe is also where many artists take up residence and as a result you can expect a wide selection of local arts and crafts. Let's also not forget the chance to pick up some seafood fresh from deception bay.

The are also numerous galleries and shops in the Redcliffe area that you can visit alongside the market, as well as a fantastic selection of restaurants.

There is of course a lot more to Redcliffe. Take a dip at the Settlement Cove Lagoon, visit the Redcliffe Museum, stroll along Bee Gee Way, take a bike ride or walk along the sea front, or parachute in with a tandem skydive if you insist on making an entrance.

[SECTION]Carrara Markets[/SECTION]

The Gold Coast has a lot of markets, Carrara Markets is one of the largest most established markets in South East Queensland. With over 400 stalls, and with much of it indoors or partially covered, this is truly an all weather market.

This is the market with everything and is still shouting at you "But wait there is more!" Along with fruit and vegetables, there are lots of cheap imported goods, hand crafts, souvenirs, plants, clothes and home decorations. There is a family fun lane that includes face painting, a jumping castle and mini golf. The first and third Sunday also includes a car boot sale and the markets are regular host to events.

The park runs 7 am to 4 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. This is definitely a market worth popping in to when you have a 'coast day'. Though expect to spend more than a few hours there and is definitely worth the trip.

[SECTION]Maleny Markets[/SECTION]

I have only visited these markets once but they left a lasting impression on me. I love Maleny and the surrounding area. So a trip to Maleny is a great day out. The best day to go there is on a Sunday so you can visit the markets .

With stalls both inside and outside the markets, it is an all weather market. Stalls are very varied. A lot of the products are locally made and there are plenty of people selling antiques, often things they have had at home all their life or handed down by their parents or even grandparents.

You can eat at the markets or head to the main strip at Maleny. If you start early enough in the morning it is easy to arrive in Maleny in time for some shopping and lunch.

[SECTION]Davies Park Markets[/SECTION]

I want to include on inner suburbs market that is worth travelling all the way into the city to visit. The Wednesday City Markets are only worth the effort if you are working in the city, The Boundary Street Markets are usually the start for an evening out in West End, The Eagle Street Sunday Markets are more for tourists or to be visited as part of a walk along the river.

But one market really stands out for me and that is the Davies Park Markets . This market includes crafts, imported goods, cheap and organic vegetables and many other products. It also has a good selection of food stalls to make it worth staying for lunch. There is also usually some entertainment on as well.

It is a great place to visit as part of trip to the South Brisbane. Maybe stop in at South Bank, shop in West End or visit the galleries in the Cultural Precinct.

[SECTION]Northey St Organic Market[/SECTION]

This is the one market doesn't quite fit my profile. It only runs from 6 am to 11 am and the focus is on fresh produce. But Northey Street is something a little special. These are the markets of the Northey Street City Farm organic farming community and many of fruit and vegetables on sale are grown at the Northey Street Farms .

While other markets have organic stalls and eco friendly products, the Northey Street Market is only that. It attracts a crowd that shares the same values. It is also a fun atmosphere with buskers encouraged.

While I wouldn't say that this market is worth the trip for everyone, it is definitely worth a cross town trip if you are into organic produce.
